Palau Recycling ActView the policy document
Key FindingsView the policy document
This policy established a recycling programme for the Republic of Palau, and a beverage container deposit fee, creating a Recycling Fund. The policy is a recycling and deposit return scheme for PET bottles and achieves a 90% recovery rate of plastic bottles. The bottles are sent to Taiwan for processing.
The policy only addresses PET bottles and has only been implemented in Koror State where they have achieved a 50% reduction in waste to landfill. Funding was from an initial Government investment of $100,000 and then funded by DRS.
Through an analytical framework, we've reviewed over 100 plastic policies. These reviews determine the effectiveness of policies in reducing plastic pollution and we offer recommendations in light of this evidence, to enhance future policy making.
