Consumers were charged 15 euro cents (USD 0.17) on plastic bags at point of sale. This later increased to 22 euro cents (USD 0.24) in 2017. This policy is widely regarded as a success, was considered effective in reducing plastic pollution, and had widespread public acceptance.
Through an analytical framework, we've reviewed over 100 plastic policies. These reviews determine the effectiveness of policies in reducing plastic pollution and we offer recommendations in light of this evidence, to enhance future policy making.
