Colombia Decree no. 2198/2017 National Tax on the Consumption of Plastic Bags
View the policy documentKey Findings
View the policy documentThis policy imposed a tax of 20 Colombian Pesos (USD 0.01) on plastic bags, increasing annually by 50% until it reached 50 Pesos (USD0.01) in 2020. This policy had limited effectiveness. While it did have an impact on consumer behaviour, it did not have the impact that was hoped on actually reducing the amount of plastic bag pollution. This could be attributed to a lack of consumer awareness and insufficient education to support the tax.
