Japan National Action Plan for Marine Plastic Litter
View the policy documentKey Findings
View the policy documentThis Action Plan focuses on marine plastics. Some of the objectives are to achieve a decrease in plastic by 25% by 2030, to achieve 60% recycling of containers and packaging by 2030, to double reuse of plastic by 2030, and aim for zero emission of marine plastics. The primary focus is not to reduce plastic use (METI, 2021). There was insufficient evidence available to review this policy at the time of the assessment as the policy is too recent to be assessed. However some reports suggest that Japan is particularly focused on innovation to solve the plastic problem by supporting businesses and scientific research (METI, 2021). The Government is providing funding (1.83 billion yen) for innovation for marine biodegradable plastic innovation (METI, 2021).
