A Circular Economy in the Netherlands by 2050
View the policy documentKey Findings
View the policy documentThis policy aims for 100% circular use of raw materials by 2050 and 50% by 2030. There is a knowledge sharing platform for this purpose called Hot Spot (Holland Circular Hotspot, 2019; Holland Circular Hotspot, 2018). The policy has led to 85,000 initiatives (Ecopreneur, 2019). The Netherlands has one of the highest recycling rates for general materials at 80% and circular use of 29% (Ecopreneur, 2019) and evidence shows that the Netherlands is progressing to achieve the first goal of 50% reduction of use of raw materials. The Netherlands is aiming to be a world leader in zero waste and is helping other countries set up similar initiatives. However here is still a large amount of plastic exported for recycling by the Netherlands to Asia (Marino, 2020; Holland Circular Hotspot, 2018).
