View the policy document
Reviewed under framework: No - insufficient evidence
Key findings: Insufficient evidence to review

The Amendment of the National Park Act bans single-use plastics from national parks for the conservation of natural resources including plastic bags with a thickness of less than 36 microns; plastic food containers; single-use plastic cups; plastic straws; plastic cutlery. The primary driver for this amendment was environmental, several reports have shown that eating plastics has resulted in the death of several animals, and figures indicate that Thailand remains among the five Asian countries responsible for more than half the plastic waste in the oceans (The Animal Reader, 2022; Agence France-Presse, 2019). The Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of Thailand is responsible for the administration of this Act.

There was insufficient evidence available to complete the evaluation framework at the time of the assessment. However, reports seem to indicate that enforcement and compliance could be a major issue for this policy (Rakshit, 2020). In order to deter litterbugs, Varawut Silpa-archa, the Minister of Natural Resources and Environment in Thailand, has decided that officials should mail boxes of trash back to campers, and tourists causing damage to national parks (Rakshit, 2020).
